Map of Science

This is really cool–a map showing the relationships among different fields of science culled from 1.6 million scientific papers. Each blob–called a node–represents a particular scientific field, and the more papers in that topic, the bigger the node. Lines connect the nodes, where the number of mutual citations of a particular topic determines the length. [...]

New Mexico’s Planet

Apparently, the New Mexico Legislature has declared Pluto to be a planet when it’s over the New Mexican sky. As the science blog Cosmic Variance points out, it’s a “remarkable display of scientific federalism.”
But really, people, is being a planet such a big deal?
