Happy Birthday, Mr. Euler

Leonhard Euler would’ve been 300 years old today. Euler was responsible for a lot of the math we learned in high school, as discussed in this NPR interview. He’s also the one who came up with Euler’s Identity, which math geeks all around say is the most beautiful equation they’ve ever seen:

e^{i\pi} + 1 = 0

Even the famed physicist Richard Feynman said it was his favorite equation as a boy. Why the big fuss? It elegantly combines the major mathematical constants (the natural base e, \pi, and the square root of -1, i)–all of which don’t seem to have anything to do with each other at first.

  • It is truly beautiful… which I haven’t noticed before… But then again, math is not my favorite subject.
